MCP+SB

Microsoft Certified Professional + Site Building

Definition: The Site Building certification is designed for MCPs who want to demonstrate their ability to plan, build, maintain, and manage interactive, sophisticated websites that use Microsoft technologies.
To Obtain:

* Must complete a total of two exams:

o 70-057 - Designing and Implementing Commerce Solutions with Microsoft Site Server 3.0 Commerce Edition
o 70-152 - Designing and Implementing Web Solutions with Microsoft Visual InterDev® 6.0

* Exams cost approximately $125 each.

Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator
To Obtain:

* Must complete four exams: three core and one elective (9 to pick from).
* Core exams must include one Client Operating System Exam (70-210 or 70-270) and two Networking System Exams (70-215 or 70-275; 70-218 or 70-278).
* CompTIA certifications (A+ and Network+, or A+ and Server+, or Security+) count towards the elective requirement. The CompTIA Security+ certification satisfies both the MCSA elective requirement and an MCSA: Security specialization requirement.

* Exams cost approximately $125.

* Comprehensive and updated list of exams is available on Microsoft.com.

* Recertification is not required but as exams are retired or tracks are redesigned you must pass the replacement exam(s).

To Obtain 'MCSA: Security':

* You must pass two more exams related to the security specialization:

The Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer

Description: The Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) credential is the premier certification for professionals who analyze the business requirements and design and implement the infrastructure for business solutions based on the Microsoft Windows® 2000 platform and Microsoft server software.

Requirements: Must complete a total of seven exams: five core and two elective.

A comprehensive and updated list of exams is available on Microsoft.com. There are a number of exams that will fulfill the certification requirements so I have not attempted to list them here.

Costs: Exams cost approximately $125 each.

Microsoft Certified Trainers

Description: Microsoft Certified Trainers (MCTs) are qualified instructors who are certified by Microsoft to deliver Microsoft Official Curriculum (MOC) instructor-led courses to Information Technology (IT) professionals and developers.

Requirements: The requirements for this certification are numerous but break down to 4 steps:
1. Earn an accepted Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) or Microsoft Business Solutions/Microsoft Dynamics credential
2. Prove your instructional presentation skills
3. Obtain a Metrics that Matter (MTM) ID
4. Apply to become an MCT and pay the annual fee

Check with Microsoft Learning and click on the Microsoft Certified Trainer (MCT) Program Guide to get the details. You must have the credentials and skills to back up your MCT. Microsoft allows only MCT's to use their official curriculum so they keep the standards high.

Costs: The certification fee for an MCT is $400 in the United States. Check Microsoft's list for fees in additional countries.

Microsoft Office Specialist

Definition: Microsoft Office Specialist (formerly MOUS) certification is the premier Microsoft desktop certification, a globally recognized standard for demonstrating desktop skills. To Obtain:

* Select one of three tracks: Office XP, Office 2000, or Microsoft Project.
* Within each track there are three levels of certification: Core (one exam), Expert (one exam), or Master (five exams).

* Exams cost approximately $125 each.

* Comprehensive and updated list of exams is available on Microsoft.com.

Microsoft Office User Specialist Master Instructor

Definition: Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOUS) certification is the premier Microsoft desktop certification, a globally recognized standard for demonstrating desktop skills. To Obtain:

* Must aquire Microsoft Office Specialist Master certification for the office suite you plan to teach (XP or 2000).
* Must prove you have instructional experience through:

Network +

Definition: This certification is for mid-level networking technicians. You are expected to have at least 9 months of experience in network administration. An A+ certification is not required but is a recommended prerequisite.
To Obtain:

* Must pass the Network+ exam.
* You will have 90 minutes to answer 72 questions.
* Each exam costs $199 ($149 for CompTIA members).

* The exam counts as an elective for the Microsoft MCSA certification.

Project Management Professional (PMP)

Description: This advanced certification is for project management professionals with extensive experience. The qualifications and testing are rigorous, making this a widely respected certification. The PMP experience and exam requirements focus on five process groups: Initiating, Planning, Executing, Controlling, & Closing.
Requirements:

* A bachelor's degree and 4,500 hours of PM experience in the five process groups, OR, a secondary school diploma and 7,500 hours of PM experience in the five process groups.
* 35 contact hours of classroom instruction that relate to project management objectives. Several types of courses fulfill this requirement.
* Supporting Documentation is required for the above qualifications.

* Pass the PMP exam, which consists of 200 multiple-choice questions to be completed in 4 hours.
Costs: PMI membership costs $100. Certification fees are $555 for non PMI members and $405 for members.

To Obtain:

* Must be a Sun Certified Programmer for Java 2 Platform.
* Must complete the Sun Certified Developer for Java 2 Platform, Programming Assignment (CX-310-252A). This exam costs approximately $250.
* Must complete exam 310-027: the Sun Certified Developer for Java 2 Platform essay exam. This exam costs approximately $150.

Sun Certified Java Programmer
Also Known As: Sun Certified Programmer for the Java 2 Platform

Definition: This certification is designed for programmers who want to prove their knowledge of the Java 2 development platform and who are experienced in using the basic syntax and structure of the Java[tm] programming language.
To Obtain:

* Must pass Sun Certified Java Programmer exam.
* The exam costs approximately $150.
* The Java 2 exam (310-025) includes 59 multiple choice/short answer questions and lasts up to two hours. A score of 61% is required to pass.

Definition: As part of the vendor-neutral Security Certified Program (SCP) sponsored by Ascendent Learning, the SCNA is designed to test knowledge of both fundamental and high-level security topics.
To Obtain:

* It is recommended that you hold a Security+ certification from CompTIA.
* You must pass two exams:

o Hardening the Infrastructure (HTI), exam SCO-411, covering:
+ Contingency Planning 5 % 2.0 - Tools and Techniques 9 %
+ Security on the Internet and the WWW 11 %
+ Router Security and ACLs 15 %

*The Network Security Fundamentals exam was retired May 31, 2003 at 5:00 PM
(CST). After that time the Hardening the Infrastructure (HTI) exam replaced the NSF exam. Before that time, both the NSF and HTI was accepted as valid exams for SCNP program. Those who have passed only NSF will be supported up through their two-year renewal date. At that point, they will be required to renew with the HTI exam. The HTI exam will leave out the introductory and fundamentals to focus on more difficult topics.

Security Certified Network Professional

Definition: The Security Certified Program certifications are vendor-neutral and cover both the core security topics as well as advanced security knowledge.The SCP is sponsored by Ascendant Learning and offers two levels of certification, the SCNA and SCNP. The SCNP certification consists of two exams: Hardening the Infrastructure (*formerly Network Security Fundamentals) and Network Defense and Countermeasures. The SCNA certification consists of the Advanced Security Implementation and the Enterprise Security Solutions exams.

The CompTIA Security+ certification is a recommended prerequisite for both SCP certifications.

SCO Advanced System Engineer

Definition: A certification designed for individuals who support and administer SCO UnixWare or OpenRelease Server.
To Obtain:

* Must pass two exams in your chosen track. Tracks available are Unix and OpenServer.
* For the Unix track you must pass SCO UnixWare 7 Administration, and SCO UnixWare 7 Network Administration.
* For the OpenServer track you must pass SCO OpenServer Release 5 Administration, and SCO OpenServer Release 5 Network Administration.

* Exams run from $125 to $180.

* Exams are open book and contain between 40 and 80 questions. Time is limited two hours and you must pass with a score of 80% or higher.

* It is recommended, although not required, that you recertify every year by taking a 2-hour comprehensive exam.

Server+

Definition: This certification is for those seeking to become certified on advanced hardware issues. Server+ deals with Industry Standard Server Architecture (ISSA) issues, such as RAID, SCSI, multiple CPUs, SANs, and others.
To Obtain:

* Must pass the Server+ exam.
* CompTIA members receive a discount.
* Each exam costs $199 ($149 for CompTIA members).

Sun Security Administrator for the Solaris 9 Operating Environment

Definition: This certification is designed for professionals who have experience (6 to 12 months is recommended) administering security in a Solaris OE environment.
To Obtain:

* Previous completion of Sun Certified System Administrator for Solaris OE and Sun Certified Network Administrator for Solaris OE are recommended, but not required.

* You must pass one exam. The exam costs $150.

* The exam includes 60 multiple choice scenario based questions, matching, dragdrop, and free response questions.

* You are required to have in-depth knowledge of the following topics:

System Security Certified Practitioner

Description: This advanced security certification is offered by ICS(2) and is designed for network and security administrators. The SSCP focuses on a Common Body of Knowlege (CBK) which is based on the following seven test domains:

* Access Controls
* Administration
* Audit and Monitoring
* Risk, Response and Recovery
* Cryptography
* Data Communications
* Malicious Code/Malware

Requirements:

* Must subscribe to the (ISC)2 Code of Ethics.
* Must have at least 1 year of cumulative work experience in one or more of the seven test domains (CBK) in information systems [IS] security.
* Must pass the SSCP certification exam.
* The exam consists of 125 multiple-choice questions. Candidates have up to 3 hours to complete the examination.

* The seven test domains defined in the CBK are covered.

Costs: The exam costs $295. The penalty for late registration or rescheduling is $10

Recertification: Recertification is required every 3 years and is obtained by earning 60 continuing professional education [CPE] credits. There is also an annual maintenance fee of $65 per year.

Sun One Middleware Certification

Definition: The Sun One Middleware program cosists of two certifications. The first, Sun Certified Developer for Sun[tm] ONE Application Server 6.0, is designed for developers who design, run and deploy applications on a Sun One Server. The second, the Sun Certified Engineer for Sun ONE Directory Server 5.x, is for engineers who design, deploy, administer and implement applications at the enterprise level.

To Obtain:

* Candidate must hold an Adobe ACE certification. This costs approximately $150.
* Must have proof of instruction skills. Acceptable qualifications include the Certified Technical Trainer (CTT) ($285), Microsoft Certified Trainer (MCT), Certified Lotus Instructor (CLI), or Certified Novell Instructor (CNI) credential.

* ACTP application takes 4-6 weeks to process.
* Applications must be submitted online.
* There is no fee to join the ACTP program.

ACCELERATED SAP

Definition: This certification is designed for ERP professionals who work with AcceleratedSAP. Certification is available in one of the following areas: Customer Solution Strategy, AcceleratedSAP Implementation, and Continuous Business Improvement.
To Obtain:

* You must pass exam in desired area (Customer Solution Strategy, AcceleratedSAP Implementation, and Continuous Business Improvement).

Associate Webmaster Professional

Definition: This beginner certification sponsored by WebYoda is designed for those who are new to web development and are looking to learn how to design static web pages and simple web sites.
To Obtain:

* Although it is not required, it is recommended that you complete three courses (online or classroom) available through WebYoda. Each course costs $95.

* You must pass the AWP exam.

* The exam costs $35 if you have taken the courses and $70 if you take it independantly.

* The exams and courseware are all available to be completed online.

 

BCIP

Brainbench Certified Internet Professional

Definition: The BCIP certification is designed for web developers, designers, and administrators who want to demonstrate proficiency in Internet-related technologies. The requirements consist of core exams as well as application- related exams.
Requirements:

* Must pass six online exams ranging in price from $19.95 to $39.95 each. Some exams are free.
* Three certifications are available: web designer, web administrator, and web developer.

 

BEA

Definition: The BEA Certified Enterprise Developer Program offers certification for most supported BEA WebLogic Server versions.
To Obtain:
* Pass one exam:
o BEA WebLogic Server 7 Enterprise Developer Exam
o BEA WebLogic Server 6 Enterprise Developer Exam
o BEA WebLogic Server 5 Enterprise Developer Exam
* Each exam costs approximately $200.

* You must fill out the online form at Bea's website to enroll in the Developer Program. You will recieve a welcome kit once this is complete.

* BEA recommends approximately 6 months hands-on experience with BEA WebLogic Server 5.1, 6.0, 6.1 or 7.0 & object oriented design and analysis experience.

* It is also strongly recommended that you take the associated training courses (WLS-D11, WLS-D21 and WLS-A11) before taking the certification exam(s).

* Recertification is required if you are two versions behind. I.e. if you took the certification exam for version 4.51 you need to update your certification to 6.0. However, if you are certified on 5.1, your certification will remain valid until a version beyond 6.0 is released.

* Registration for the exam is available through Prometric.

*BEA participates in the jCert certification at the 3B level of Enterprise Developer certification

 

BRAINBENCH

Description: Brainbench provides an online service that allows certification on a very wide range of products and specialties. Many of the 375 exams are free. For those that are not you can pay $19.95 for a single exam or $189 for a one year subscription service. Either way, Brainbench maintains an online transcript which you can distribute at will.

* You must pass Designing Cisco Networks (DCN) exam #640-441.
* You must also sign the Cisco Career Certifications Agreement.

* The exam costs approximately $125.

 

CCDP

Cisco Certified Design Professional
Definition: A certification designed for individuals who design complex routed LAN, routed WAN, and switched LAN networks of 100 to more than 500 nodes, that utilize Cisco routers and switches.
To Obtain:

* You must first earn the CCDA and CCNA certifications.
* Must pass the Cisco Routing exam #640-503.
* Must pass the Cisco Switching exam #640-504.
* Must pass the Remote Access exam #640-505.
* Must pass the Cisco Internetwork Design (CID) exam #640-025.
* You have the option of taking a single, composite exam called the Foundation R/S exam (#640-509) in place of the routing, switching, and remote access exams.

* Each exam costs approximately $125.

* Must recertify every 3 years by passing the CCDP recertification exam.

Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert
Definition: This expert level certification is one of the most respected in the industry and will demonstrate your level of Cisco networking expertise, design savvy, and trouble-shooting ability for large, diverse networks.
To Obtain:

* You must first select one of three certification tracks:
o Routing and Switching,
o Communications and Services, or
o Security.

* Must pass a written exam. The written portion costs $300 and will consist of one of the following exams:
o Routing & Switching 350-001,
o Security 350-018,
o Optical 350-020,
o Cable 350-021 or
o DSL 350-022.

* Must pass a hands-on lab exam. The lab exam costs $1250, and lasts a full day.

* Must recertify every 2 years by passing the CCIE recertification exam.

Cisco Certified Internetwork Professional

Definition: Another professional level certification, the CCIP is for those who work with end-to-end Cisco solutions involving telecommunications technologies including including IP routing, IP multicast, cable, DSL, content networking or IP telephony.

This certification requires three exams, and although it's not required, a CCNA is a recommended prerequisite. You will have to recertify every three years by taking the CCIP recertification exam.
To Obtain:

* You must first earn the CCNA certification.
* Must pass the Building Scalable Cisco Networks (BSCI) exam #641-901.
* Must pass the Multicast and Cisco QOS exam #640-905. * Must pass either either a Cable, MPLS, or Security elective.

Definition: A non-technical certification designed for executives, managers and professionals who want to show demonstrated e-commerce business skills.
To Obtain:

* There are three ways to obtain the CEC:
o You can pre-qualify if you have 3+ years of documented e-business experience or if you are a technology executive.
o You can use current college credit if you have completed a concentration, minor, or certificate with a focus on technology or the internet.
o Take the CEC Interactive Courses which can be completed online in just a few weeks.

* You must have 2 years of research, study or work experience.

* You must agree to abide by the ICECC code of ethics and Professional Ethics Standards.

* There is an annual renewal that requires you to complete 15 hours of ICECC approved education per year.

Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)

Description: This certification is designed for experienced professionals who are responsible for developing the information security policies, standards, and procedures and managing their implementation across an organization.

Requirements:

* Must have four years (or 3 years with a college degree or equivalent life experience) of direct work experience in one or more of the ten test domains of the information systems security Common Body of Knowledge (CBK).
